What is hook?

Also known as: Opening line

The first line of a post, designed to stop the scroll and pull people in.

A hook is the opening of a caption, video, or post — the first words someone reads before deciding whether to keep going. Because feeds truncate captions and attention is short, the hook does most of the work in earning a read.

Strong hooks are specific and create a small tension or curiosity gap: a surprising number, a contrarian claim, a relatable problem. Weak hooks are vague or generic ('Excited to share…'). Many creators write the hook last and test several versions, since it disproportionately affects performance.

Example

Instead of 'Some thoughts on hiring,' a sharper hook: 'I made one hiring mistake that cost us six months. Here's the signal I ignored.'

Postpane's AI generates multiple caption variations for each post, so you can pick the strongest opening line.
